The roots of French whisky
Graal (French for ‘the Holy Grail’)… the name immediately sets the tone for a legendary whisky born in the Glazik lands of the Finistère in Brittany, a hilly region known for menhir standing stones, manors and medieval castles. In these lands bordering the enchanted Brocéliande forest, the legend of King Arthur is never far away.
Opening this chapter dedicated to French spirits, Eddu 21 Year Old Graal is quite simply the oldest whisky ever bottled in France. Indeed, while it is true that the Menhirs distillery, founded in 1986 by the Le Lay family (distillers since 1921), was not the first to venture into whisky production, with the Warenghem distillery, also located in Brittany, launching WB (Whisky Breton) in 1987, it has managed to keep some of its early barrels from before it released its first whisky, Eddu Silver, in 2002.

whisky x beer
The fourth and final chapter in this catalogue’s whisky x beer selection, this French trio crosses mainland France from west to east, pairing two single malts from the Warenghem distillery near Lannion with a Belgian Ale from the Sainte Cru brewery in Colmar. Named Barrique Mécanique in reference to Orange Mécanique (Clockwork Orange), the iconic blonde beer in Sainte Cru’s permanent range, it was aged for three months in sherry casks previously containing Armorik whisky.

Through the grapevine
Variations on the theme of Cognac
After two years of absence, La Maison du Whisky’s cognac range Through The Grapevine is back. Its new design returns its attention to grapes and guest producers. Launched in 2017, the range offers a showcase of the Cognac terroir through unique cuvées carefully selected from exceptional estates and bottled at cask strength. The reference to the soul anthem “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” is no happenstance. Indeed, in the same way this song, made famous by Marvin Gaye in 1968, has been covered by countless artists, from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Ella Fitzgerald, Through the Grapevine revisits the standards of cognac, creating deeply authentic variations. These rare and sometimes unusual bottlings are the result of many hours of patient research by the teams at La Maison du Whisky. For this new series, they tasted 112 samples from 25 producers and more than 50 vintages…

CHRISTIAN DROUIN
When tradition meets innovation
This year Maison Drouin brings us a contrasting duo of Calvados. The oldest, distilled in 1972, is 42 years older than the younger, produced in 2014. Selected from the Drouin family’s oldest vintages, the 1972 dates from a period when the distillery had not yet begun selling its cider brandies. These were only released on the market in 1979, once it was decided there was sufficient stock to enable their sale. While the very old Pays D’Auge reveals complex aromas of stewed apple that reflect its wonderful maturity, the younger bottling contrasts this with the freshness of stillcrisp fruit. The difference in age is further accentuated by the 8 year old’s original finish in casks from the Swedish Mackmyra distillery, following seven years of maturation in used barrels. This collaboration with the famous single malt produced just north of Stockholm follows the launch in 2020 of their Äppelblom whisky, which was matured in… Christian Drouin Calvados casks.

Distillerie NUSBAUMER
New Make, fruits and botanicals
Ever since it was first established in 1947, Nusbaumer has continued to produce spirits inspired by its terroir of the Villé Valley in Alsace’s Vosges mountains. Its brandies, crèmes and liqueurs express the colours and aromas of this low-mountain region where the distillation of berries, fruits, plants and botanicals is based on ancient expertise and knowledge. And yet, while staying true to the traditional, craft techniques for which it is famous, the distillery explores modern paths nonetheless.
