A young 269-year-old distillery
Established in 1753, Hampden is one of Jamaica’s oldest distilleries. And yet its story has only just begun. Before the estate was bought by the Hussey family in 2009, its rums had never been aged or bottled on site. Up until that point, its spirit was exported, mainly to Europe, and sold to independent bottlers who used it to add flavour to their blended rums, or otherwise to confectioners and perfumers, in an activity that now continues alongside the official bottling of the distillery’s heavy rums, the first aged versions of which were only released in 2018.

A new rum trail
Sailing planet rum since the mid-90s, Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand and founder of Plantation, brings us blended and vintage rums from distilleries across the globe, selected and aged in his cellars in Cognac. Matured first in their homeland in a tropical climate, the rums then join France by boat to continue ageing in Ferrand cognac casks in Charentes. This second finish is carried out according to traditional practices from the 18th century. Changing the casks’ positions, alternating between humid and dry cellars, gradual re-staving of barrels, sparing rehydration of spirits with water that has also spent time in rum casks… these techniques trialled in Plantation’s cellars make it possible to very precisely manage the spirits’ ageing.

Arhumatic was founded in 2014 by Clémence and Thierry Oger and creates recipes of rum punch using only seasonal fruits and plants. Tropicae Solis combines the power of a high-ester Jamaican rum with the exotic flavours of passion fruit, pineapple, Lady Fingers bananas, star fruit, mango, kaffir lime, pomegranate, kiwi, lime, ginger and cane syrup. Carefully reviewing every ingredient in its composition, its flavour and aroma palette is a delicious combination of heady, sweet and tangy sequences all harmoniously stacked together.

NEISSON
90 years of tradition and innovation
On 10 December 2022, the smallest distillery in Martinique, founded by the Neisson brothers in Carbet on the NorthCaribbean coast, will celebrate its 90th anniversary. One of the founders, John, was a trained chemist and dedicated his life to improving distillation techniques, and his descendants have kept alive this spirit of innovation and experimentation that has characterised Neisson for three generations. Still independent, the distillery listed as a “Living Heritage Business’’ (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant) played a key role in the creation of the Martinique AOC in the 1990s, thanks to Claudine Neisson-Vernant who, with her son Grégory, also converted part of the land to organic farming in 2013. The distillery not only created the island’s first organic rum in 2016 but is also known for introducing brut de colonne (still proof) rum, and continues to research the influence of casks and heating profiles on how rum matures.

RENEGADE
Rum according to Renegade
With its provocative name, Renegade has been shaking things up in the rum world since it was first created in 2020 by Mark Reynier, creator of the Waterford single malt. With a capacity of more than a million litres of pure alcohol per year, the young Caribbean distillery is located on the island of Grenada, a territory with a fascinating geography characterised by mangroves, volcanic soils pierced with craters and lakes, overlooked by Mount St. Catherine (840 m), which has been inactive since time immemorial.
Like Waterford, Renegade bases its philosophy and production methods on the concept of terroir, making the most of the hilly terrain and sediment-rich soil. Like the barley used to produce the Irish single malt, the sugar cane harvests are processed individually, field by field, farm by farm, according to the principle of Single Farm Origin. Each bottle bears a “cane code” indicating the distillation technique (pot or column still), the variety and exact origin of the sugar cane, including the farm, field, plot and soil type.

Caroni’s natural purity
Among the rare bottlings found in this creation catalogue, the legendary Caroni distillery unveils the first two editions in its Paradise range. These cask strength rums were produced from stocks discovered in 2004 by Luca Gargano, CEO of the Italian bottler Velier, two years after the Trinidad state distillery closed. Featuring vintages from 1974 to 2000, these casks were kept on the Caribbean island until 2019 and then sent to the Cognac region of France. A special event was held to mark their transfer on 12 April 2019. 23 Caroni specialists and enthusiasts organised into eight groups of tasters or ‘tasting gangs’ were invited to select the finest barrels to be bottled individually. All of the stocks were then transferred into demijohns to store the precious liquid that had until then been aged in a tropical climate.

When tradition meets innovation
In 2018, La Maison du Whisky and Velier were invited to Bangalore by Ashok Chokalingam, director of single malt production at the Amrut distillery, which has also produced rum since 1955. During the trip, our host introduced us to a special category of rum, produced with jaggery, a solidified, unrefined sugar that is diluted before fermentation and then distilled. It has been produced at Amrut using very artisanal methods, once a year, in small quantities, between November and December, since 2012.
