For the first time ever, the Artist range is dedicating an entire collection to a single distillery, one that has built a legend for itself ! Strathisla’s whiskies have, since 1786, been produced in the outskirts of the small town of Keith. Its historic roots and remarkable architecture have Scottish tourist guides frequently citing it as one of the most beautiful distilleries in the country, with its pagoda roofs, paved courtyard and waterwheel. Privy to expertise honed since the 18th century, Strathisla is known for being the key element in a number of blended Scotches, including one of the world’s favourites, Chivas. This year, the Artist range boldly offers an exploration into five cask strength single casks from Strathisla, distilled between 1991 and 2012.

Water, yeast and grain… beer and whisky use the same ingredients, and they also share the same first three steps in their production, malting, brewing/mashing and fermentation. It is a shared history, which various breweries highlight by maturing their beer in whisky casks.
This year, in partnership with the specialist Distributeur des Brasseurs Indépendants (DBI), La Maison du Whisky offers four French craft beers aged for several months in single malt casks from the Scottish, English and French distilleries Arran, Edradour, Bimber and Armorik.

The perfect synthesis
Compass Box has tackled the Antipodes theme with real enthusiasm, creating a bespoke blended Scotch named Synthesis. “Why Synthesis? As blenders, when faced with the theme of antipodes — extreme opposites — we naturally wanted to combine them, to synthesise them!” whisky maker James Saxon explains. The London-based company drew on the many different parameters of blending, an art whose glory it has been dedicated to restoring since 2000. Master blenders have more than one trick up their sleeve and they are able to work with the different origins of whiskies, as well as their age, the casks used to mature them and, lastly, their proportions.

Six malts and three collections
Founded in 1895 in Elgin, in north-east Scotland, Gordon & MacPhail is unrivalled when it comes to rare whiskies and very old vintages. Owning more than 7,000 casks in Elgin and as many resting in the warehouses of numerous distilleries in Speyside, the Highlands and Islay, this independent bottler has become a master in the art of maturation. In 2021, it launched the oldest single malt ever bottled in the world, a Glenlivet 80 Year Old, in its Generations range, revealed in our À La Conquête Des Origines catalogue. This year, six versions distilled between 1955 and 2003, all matured in sherry casks, have been selected from the famous bottler’s most prestigious ranges, determined according to the age and exceptional character of each whisky. This liquid heritage is managed by Stephen Rankin, a fourth-generation member of the family-owned Gordon & MacPhail, and his team.

In the warehouses of Signatory Vintage
Every year, as winter ends, the La Maison du Whisky teams head to Signatory Vintage’s warehouses at the Edradour distillery in Pitlochry in the southern Highlands of Scotland. This journey marks the first of many round trips between Paris and Scotland and countless tastings, after which La Maison du Whisky selects the Signatory Vintage bottlings and versions of Edradour and Ballechin that will be unveiled at Whisky Live Paris that year. On site, the teams are always welcomed by the owner Andrew Symington and his alter ego Desmond “Des” McCagherty, who guides them through the endless rows of whitewashed warehouses where the countless casks of some 60 Scottish distilleries lie sleeping. Then comes the time for hours of blind tastings, in the cold and humid setting of the distillery warehouses, often blanketed by snow at the time of year.

TAG, which featured some 30 distilleries when it first launched, aims to count more than a hundred brands by 2023 in all spirits categories.

The last chapter in this journey dedicated to Scotch whisky, the Artist range was created by La Maison du Whisky in 2011. Dedicated to cask strength single casks, this unique collection of exceptional single malts selected from the warehouses of Signatory Vintage brings together vintage bottlings aged for 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years, and sometimes even longer. This twelfth edition is particularly ambitious and compiles six expressions, the oldest, a 44 year-old Bunnahabhain from 1977.. Artist #12 explores every rich and spicy nuance of sherry cask ageing, with the exception of one version, the Clynelish 1990, which has been matured in a bourbon cask and offers a stunning salty and herbaceous counterpoint to the other five expressions.

Traceable origins of the barley grown on nearby farms, incredible transparency through the streaming of realtime images of its warehouses and stills on its website, drawing its inspiration from wine… The innovative Waterford distillery, founded in 2014 by Mark Reynier, is pushing the boundaries of the old whisky industry, moving the spirits’ centre of gravity towards the grain. Its Single Farm Origin whiskies are guided by a unique principle: each expression is produced with the harvest of a local farm whose barley is identified, stored, malted, fermented, distilled and aged separately. This rare attention to raw ingredients, their origins and short supply chains inspired La Maison du Whisky to undertake a custom project with French Michelin-star restaurant, Frenchie.

“When La Maison du Whisky suggested we create our first spirit in partnership with a distillery, we thought it was a great idea. The partnership with Waterford really made sense to us. Its approach to terroir, respect of raw ingredients and the way it works with the land all echo our own philosophy. Ned Gahan offered us several versions of this micro-batch. The one we chose, which is made with biodynamic barley, is elegant and authentic and heavily influenced by its grain. “Rue du Nil” will be available in our restaurants and be used in a recipe on our menu.”
Grégory Marchand Frenchie founder and chef Frenchie — Established in Paris in 2009 by Gregory Marchand, Frenchie now has four addresses (Frenchie, La Bar à Vins, FTG, Pigalle) and a wine and spirits store in Paris. Its menu features dishes created with products from the farm L’Envol, of which Gregory Marchand is a founding member of. This sustainable farm uses practices inspired by permaculture and is located in the Essonne region of France, just 25 miles from the capital. Frenchie has also opened two additional restaurants in London and Switzerland.

After Peat Stop, matured in Kilchoman casks and released in 2021, Piggy Brewing is back with Repeat Stop, a thick and intense black beer with notes of peat and sherry aged for three months in Ballechin casks.

It is with a duo from two young American distilleries that La Distillerie Générale makes its début in our creation catalogue in a thrilling cumulation of firsts. Indeed, not only does this selection feature the first bottlings of bourbons released by La Distillerie Générale, but they are also the first casks to be made available on the French market by both Smooth Ambler — a distillery located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains — and Rabbit Hole — located in Louisville, Kentucky.

The importance of yeasts
Nikka turns 90 in 2024. In the run-up to this anniversary, the brand launched the Discovery range in 2021, which looks at a different stage in the creation of its single malts Yoichi and Miyagikyo every year. For its first edition, this new range broke completely with tradition and offered a peated Miyagikyo and an unpeated Yoichi. Returning to the peated profile of Yoichi and the finesse of Miyagikyo this year, the 2022 edition focuses on yeasts, in a rare move which becomes the main point of distinction between the two whiskies. The yeast used for Yoichi, for example, develops aromas of Ginjo sake, while the strain used for the Miyagikyo creates notes of peach and apricot.

“My artworks are always the result of a meeting, a chance encounter, a detail that struck me or a face that inspired me… These self-portraits are in part reminiscences of the Minotaure magazine which I saw as a child in my father’s house, a Surrealist magazine published in Paris in the 1930s. I have been obsessed with the figure of the Minotaur ever since. Its features are mixed with mine. I don’t see anything monstrous in it. It’s simply a game for me to overlay them.
These oil-on-canvas self-portraits are the result of a never-ending project, doomed never to be completed. I painted them in the 2000s, then I worked on them again on several occasions, each time adding new layers, new meaning, new symbols, graffiti, colour and writing.
That’s almost always how I work. My pieces are never really finished. Each painting is a timeless mille-feuille in and of itself. Like life. My artworks need no message; there is no need to explain what is there, in front of our eyes. The colours I use are also powerful and bright because I want to catch people’s attention, to draw the eye and mark the retina and the mind, so people stop and really look, the way no-one really knows how to anymore.” Aki Kuroda

From Mount Fuji to the Eiffel Tower
Blended by Ichiro Akuto himself, Chichibu Paris Edition is back in our creation catalogue for the fifth year running. Stylistically inspired by the iconic Ichiro’s Malt Cards collection, La Maison du Whisky has chosen to decorate the bottles in this limited edition with lithographs from Art Nouveau artist, Henri Rivière (1864-1951). The labels depict illustrations from 36 Views of the Eiffel Tower, a book published in 1902 by the artist, a great lover of Japanese engravings, and inspired by the renowned work from Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), 36 Views of Mount Fuji, which featured 46 prints produced between 1830 and 1833.

Henri Rivière illustrator and printmaker,
In 1886, illustrator and printmaker Henri Rivière (1864-1951) became a stage director and set designer for a shadow theatre at the Chat Noir cabaret at the foot of Montmartre. In 1890, influenced by the Japanese prints he collected, he discovered colour woodcuts and learned how to complete every stage in the process, from grinding the colours to printing. Inspired by Brittany and Paris, his artworks made him a key player in the revival of colour prints. He also brought colour lithography fame with several series of landscapes, including 36 Views of the Eiffel Tower.

The Shinshu distillery produced its first whisky in 1985, in the heart of the Japanese Alps, on the island of Honshū, in an environment characterised by harsh weather and extreme temperature variations.

Selecting casks for the catalogue is always a difficult process when confronted with such high quality. These two bottlings were chosen from around 50 casks for their complexity and the contrast they offer in Kavalan’s intense repertoire, which results, in part, from its unique natural environment.
